material conditions and circumstances which made The American Enlightenment
possible.
The American
Enlightenment was a period of intellectual ferment in the thirteen American
colonies in the period 1714–1818, which led to the American Revolution and the
creation of the American Republic. Several material conditions and
circumstances made this period of intellectual and philosophical growth
possible:
Economic
Growth: During the 18th century, the American colonies experienced significant
economic growth. The expanding economies of the colonies, particularly in the
areas of trade and commerce, created a class of merchants and businessmen who
became influential in colonial society. These individuals often became patrons
of Enlightenment thought and helped to disseminate these ideas throughout the
colonies.
Education and
Literacy: The period saw a rise in literacy rates and the establishment of new
colleges and libraries, providing greater access to education and a wide range
of ideas, including those of the Enlightenment. The increased literacy and
availability of reading material allowed Enlightenment ideas to spread and take
hold among a broader swath of the population.
Religious
Diversity and Toleration: The American colonies had a diversity of religious
beliefs, which led to an environment of relative religious toleration. This
encouraged free thought and allowed for the critique of traditional religious
authority, one of the hallmarks of the Enlightenment.
Print Culture:
The Enlightenment coincided with the expansion of the print industry in the
colonies. Newspapers, pamphlets, and books proliferated, providing a means for
the rapid dissemination of Enlightenment ideas. Prominent thinkers such as
Benjamin Franklin made substantial use of this medium.
Political
Autonomy: While the American colonies were under British rule, they had a
significant degree of political autonomy, which allowed for the development of
political structures and ideas that were distinct from those in Britain. These
conditions nurtured the development of the democratic ideals that were central
to the American Enlightenment and the subsequent American Revolution.
Contact with
Native American Cultures: Interactions with Native American cultures also
influenced Enlightenment thinkers in America. Ideas about natural rights and
critiques of European society were informed, in part, by observations of Native
American ways of life.
Influence from
European Enlightenment: Transatlantic connections also played a crucial role in
the American Enlightenment. Many European Enlightenment ideas and thinkers,
like John Locke, Voltaire, and Montesquieu, influenced American thinkers. They
adopted, adapted, and expanded upon these ideas, applying them to the unique
social and political context of the American colonies.
All these
factors created an environment conducive to intellectual exchange and the
development of new ideas about government, religion, and human nature, all of
which were integral to the American Enlightenment.
