Q1) Describe memory
hierarchy? Explain the types of memory hierarchy.
Memory hierarchy refers to the arrangement of different types of computer memory in a hierarchical order based on their speed, size, and cost. The main purpose of memory hierarchy is to provide the CPU with a storage system that can deliver data as quickly as possible while also balancing cost and capacity considerations. In general, memory hierarchy consists of several levels, each with different characteristics. The most common types of memory hierarchy include:
Registers have
the fastest access time but are very limited in capacity, typically ranging
from a few bytes to a few kilobytes.
Cache memory is
a small-sized type of volatile computer memory that provides high-speed data
storage and retrieval closer to the CPU than main memory.
It acts as a
buffer between the CPU and main memory, storing frequently accessed data and
instructions.
It is divided
into multiple levels (L1, L2, L3) based on proximity to the CPU and size, with
L1 being the smallest and fastest, and L3 being the largest and slowest among
the cache levels.
Main memory,
typically referred to as RAM, is the primary volatile memory of a computer
system.
It is directly
accessible by the CPU and serves as an intermediary between the CPU and
secondary storage devices such as hard drives and SSDs.
Secondary
storage devices, such as hard disk drives (HDDs) and solid-state drives (SSDs),
provide non-volatile, high-capacity storage for data and programs.
Unlike primary
memory (registers, cache, RAM), secondary storage retains data even when the
power is turned off.
Secondary
storage is slower than primary memory but offers significantly larger storage
capacity and lower cost per unit of storage.
Tertiary
storage refers to archival storage systems, such as magnetic tape libraries or
optical discs.
These storage
devices offer even larger storage capacities compared to secondary storage but
have much slower access times.
Tertiary
storage is typically used for long-term backup, archival, and disaster recovery
purposes rather than for frequent access to data.
The memory
hierarchy is designed to optimize the trade-off between speed, cost, and
capacity by providing the CPU with fast access to frequently used data and
instructions while efficiently utilizing the available resources. The
hierarchical arrangement ensures that data is stored in the most appropriate
memory level based on its access frequency and importance to the CPU's current
tasks.
