Q1) Explain the
different stages of System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) and describe the requirements
for system development.
The System Development
Life Cycle (SDLC) is a structured approach to creating and maintaining
information systems. It consists of several stages, each with its own set of
activities and deliverables. The stages can vary slightly depending on the
specific methodology or framework being used, but generally, they include:
Planning: This
stage involves defining the scope, objectives, and feasibility of the project.
Key activities may include conducting a feasibility study, defining project
goals, creating a project plan, and establishing the project team.
Analysis:
During this stage, the current system (if applicable) is studied in detail, and
user requirements are gathered. Analysts work closely with stakeholders to
understand their needs and document functional and non-functional requirements.
The goal is to create a detailed understanding of what the new system needs to
accomplish.
Design: In this
stage, the system's architecture and detailed specifications are created. This
includes designing the user interface, database structure, software modules,
and network infrastructure. Designers focus on creating a solution that meets
the requirements gathered during the analysis stage while adhering to best
practices and standards.
Implementation:
This stage involves building the system according to the design specifications.
Developers write code, configure hardware and software components, and
integrate third-party systems if necessary. Testing also begins during this
stage, including unit testing of individual components and integration testing
to ensure they work together correctly.
Testing:
Testing is a crucial stage where the system is thoroughly evaluated to identify
and fix any defects or issues. This includes various types of testing such as
functional testing to ensure the system meets the specified requirements,
performance testing to assess its speed and scalability, and security testing
to identify vulnerabilities.
Deployment:
Once testing is complete and the system is deemed ready for production, it is
deployed to users. This involves installing the system on servers, configuring
user accounts and permissions, and providing training and documentation to
users.
Maintenance:
The final stage involves maintaining and supporting the system throughout its
lifecycle. This includes monitoring its performance, addressing user feedback
and reported issues, making necessary updates and enhancements, and eventually
retiring the system when it becomes obsolete.
In addition to
the stages of the SDLC, there are certain requirements for system development
that are critical for success:
User
Requirements: These are the needs and expectations of the system's end-users.
Gathering and understanding user requirements is essential for designing a
system that meets their needs and provides value.
Functional
Requirements: These specify what the system should do, such as the features,
functions, and capabilities it should have. Functional requirements are derived
from user requirements and serve as the basis for system design and
development.
Non-functional
Requirements: These define the quality attributes of the system, such as
performance, reliability, security, and usability. Non-functional requirements
are just as important as functional requirements and must be carefully
considered during system design and implementation.
Technical Requirements:
These specify the hardware, software, and other technical components needed to
build and run the system. Technical requirements ensure that the system is
built on a suitable technological foundation and can be effectively deployed
and maintained.
Regulatory
Requirements: Depending on the industry and the nature of the system, there may
be regulatory or compliance requirements that need to be met. These could
include data privacy regulations, industry standards, or security requirements.
Business
Requirements: These describe the broader objectives and constraints of the
project, such as budget, timeline, and strategic alignment with organizational
goals. Business requirements provide context for the development effort and
help prioritize features and resources.
By carefully
managing these requirements throughout the SDLC, stakeholders can ensure that
the resulting system meets the needs of users, complies with relevant
regulations, and delivers value to the organization.
Q2) What is a digital
library? Discuss the major issues and challenges involved in its development.
Q3) Define a Database
Management System (DBMS). Describe the logical/ conceptual structure of a DBMS.
II) Answer any four of the following in not more than
500 words each.
Q1) Describe the
criteria for evaluating the quality of an information retrieval system.
Q2) Describe various
stages of Management Information System (MIS) development.
Q3) Describe the
methods of knowledge representation in an Expert System.
Q4) Explain the
concept of digital Libraries and their characteristics.
Q5) Discuss the
strategies for optimization of Structured Query Formulation.
Q6) Describe the
functions of various operators used for searching of databases.
