Q.1 Explain the terms
absorptivity, reflectivity and transmissivity of radiant energy. How are they
related to each other for a black body and an opaque body?
Absorptivity
(α): This refers to the fraction of incident radiation absorbed by a material.
It indicates how well a material absorbs radiant energy. A high absorptivity
means that the material absorbs most of the incoming radiation, while a low
absorptivity means that it reflects or transmits most of the radiation.
Reflectivity
(ρ): Reflectivity is the fraction of incident radiation that is reflected by a
material. It represents the ability of a material to bounce back radiant energy
without absorbing it. A high reflectivity means that the material reflects most
of the radiation, while a low reflectivity means that it absorbs or transmits
most of the radiation.
Transmissivity
(τ): Transmissivity refers to the fraction of incident radiation that passes
through a material. It measures the ability of a material to transmit radiant
energy without absorption or reflection. High transmissivity means that the
material allows most of the radiation to pass through, while low transmissivity
means that it absorbs or reflects most of the radiation.
A black body
absorbs all incident radiation, so its absorptivity (α) is 1, and its
reflectivity (ρ) and transmissivity (τ) are both 0. This means that all the
energy incident on a black body is absorbed, none is reflected, and none is
transmitted.
An opaque body
reflects or absorbs most of the incident radiation, so its absorptivity (α) is
relatively high, its reflectivity (ρ) is also relatively high, and its
transmissivity (τ) is low. However, the sum of absorptivity, reflectivity, and
transmissivity for an opaque body is typically close to 1, as it either absorbs
or reflects nearly all incident radiation and transmits very little.
In summary,
absorptivity, reflectivity, and transmissivity are related to each other such
that for any given material, the sum of these three parameters is equal to 1.
